FRISCO , Texas (AP) — Trysten Hill spent part of his 21st birthday talking football with Dallas defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli, about a month before the Cowboys made the former Central Florida defender their first pick of the draft in the second round. At the time, Hill was dealing with questions about his final season with the Golden Knights, when a coaching change resulted in the defensive tackle starting just one game after Hill was a full-time starter for two seasons under former coach Scott Frost.Hill sold the no-nonsense Marinelli that night and in other conversations before the draft, and ultimately won over enough of the Dallas staff to get taken 58th overall by a team that didn’t have a first-round pick because of a trade for receiver Amari Cooper last season. Now it’s time for Hill to build on that first impression, starting with rookie minicamp this weekend.“I think that kind of got fueled the wrong way,” Hill said of his relationship with the UCF staff under Josh Heupel, Frost’s replacement following a 13-0 season in 2017. “I know what it’s like to be coached by all different types of coaches. The emotional coach and the demanding coach. I respond well to both.”Hill, who showed displeasure with his playing time after a Fiesta Bowl loss to LSU that snapped UCF’s 25-game winning streak, acknowledged that he could have handled the coaching transition better. But he said he went back to UCF after the draft and thanked the coaches for helping him mature and achieve his goal of reaching the NFL.“I can’t go back in the past and change that,” Hill said. “Ever since then I have gone back to UCF and talked and been able to go out to practice. I know having my roots at UCF is really important and I want to keep establishing that.”Hill also said the coaching change helped him on the field, because of a switch to the 4-3 that gave the Cowboys a better glimpse of how the 308-pounder fits on the interior of their defensive line. He’s a backup to three-year starter Maliek Collins — for now.“It’s unbelievable how hard he plays ,” Marinelli said. “You’d be hard pressed to see any guy playing that hard at just about every position. It’s just about every down, his motor is running. When you see that, that reflects football character.”Owner Jerry Jones has no concerns about the rest of Hill’s character, despite the mystery surrounding his junior season at UCF before Hill declared early for the draft.“When you have a change in a coaching staff, especially if you have it at that critical juncture when you’re getting ready to finish your college career, it’s like losing a parent to some degree,” Jones said. “And that’s quite an adjustment for anyone.”Being a backup his final season at UCF didn’t affect Hill’s production. He had the best year of his college career, with three sacks and 10 1/2 tackles for loss. His 36 tackles also were his collegiate high.“We’re just a day into this, but certainly an impressive young man and that’s one of the reasons we drafted him,” coach Jason Garrett said. “He’s like all of them. We’re trying to get to know them and they’re trying to get to know what we want in every opportunity we have together.”Hill is joining a defensive line led by DeMarcus Lawrence, who just signed a $105 million, five-year contract with the highest per-season average ($21 million) in club history. Robert Quinn , who had three seasons of double-digit sacks in his first four years, came in a trade with Miami.Marinelli has high hopes that Hill can be a threat as a pass rusher from inside. The longtime coach considers that potential weapon the most important on his defense.“I’ve always had a philosophy, you develop the man first and then you develop the player,” Marinelli said. “It’s important to me that I help him become the man he wants to be. That usually happens through the work that we do. Then we’ve got to help him be a good player.”Making an impression on Marinelli was important enough to Hill for him to spend a milestone birthday sitting at “two little chairs pulled up to a table,” talking drills and other football matters.“That’s the experience that I’m happy to look back at and say that I spent my 21st with my coach,” Hill said.It helped the Cowboys believe Hill was coachable. Boston’s offense showed why it is one of the best in baseball.

Rafael Devers, Jackie Bradley Jr., and Xander Bogaerts all homered and the Boston Red Sox routed the Seattle Mariners 9-3 on Sunday.

”Today we did an outstanding job finishing the game and we got the W,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. ”We are a good team. We know how to play the game and we turn the page really quick.”

Devers’ 11th homer of the season capped a five-run, two-out rally in the third against Seattle starter Mike Leake (7-4).

”They were making it tough today,” Leake said. ”They weren’t giving me any breaks today.”

Andrew Benintendi and Bogaerts began Boston’s rally with a pair of singles. J.D. Martinez drew a nine pitch walk to load the bases before Mitch Moreland drove in two with a single to centerfield, his first hit of the series Cullen Gillaspia Jersey , and Devers followed with a blast off the Hit It Here Cafe in right field to give Boston a 5-0 lead.

”Anytime you can put up a five spot in the inning, you are happy with it,” Moreland said. ”That was a good inning for us.”

The Red Sox pulled away in the seventh against right-handed reliever Chasen Bradford, who gave up three runs and two homers while getting two outs.

Bradley Jr. sent Bradford’s first pitch over the centerfield wall for his fourth home run this season. Benintendi hit his third single of the game with one out before Bogaerts put Boston ahead 8-2 with a shot into the bullpen in left centerfield, his 12th of the season and fourth of the series.

Facing left-hander Roenis Elias in the eighth, Benintendi extended Boston’s lead to 9-2 with a sacrifice fly to center.

The Red Sox have hit three or more home runs 10 times this season, and are 36-7 when scoring five or more runs.

Boston starter Eduardo Rodriguez picked up his sixth straight win in as many starts, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out nine. Rodriguez (9-1) has allowed two or fewer runs in each of his starts during his winning streak, and the Red Sox are 13-1 in Rodriguez’s starts this season.

”It was really good,” Rodriguez said of his start. ”All of my pitches were working. It was really great.”

The Mariners loaded the bases with no outs for the heart of their order against Rodriguez in the fifth, but managed just one run. Jean Segura cut Seattle’s deficit to 5-2 with a fielder’s choice, but Seattle’s rally was cut short following back-to-back fly outs from Mitch Haniger and Nelson Cruz.

”He had to work for it that fifth inning but he limited the damage Rock Ya-Sin Jersey ,” Cora said. ”. He did a good job. Good fastball. He was more aggressive in the strike zone.”

Cruz hit his 17th home run of the season in the fourth, sending a 3-2 fastball from Martinez 442 feet in to the upper deck in left field to trim Seattle’s deficit to 5-1. Cruz has homered five times in his last nine games.

In the eighth, Ryon Healy doubled down the left field line, scoring Cruz to make it 9-3.

The Red Sox improved to 18-5 in series finales, and have won five straight day games on the road.

Mariners: RHP Nick Vincent (groin) is scheduled to make a rehab start with Triple-A Tacoma on Monday, then make a rehab appearance with Double-A Arkansas on Wednesday before joining the Mariners during their three game series in Boston beginning Friday.

Red Sox: Chris Sale (6-4, 2.75 ERA) takes the mound as the Red Sox continue their road trip against the Twins on Tuesday. Sale has allowed just one run in each of his last two starts and has nine starts this season allowing one or fewer earned runs.

Mariners: Marco Gonzales (7-3, 3.42) goes for his sixth win in as many starts when the Mariners begin a 10-game road trip against the Yankees on Tuesday. Gonzalez has allowed just six earned runs in his last six starts combined.
